To date, no “smart” Medication Adherence system for the home has been accepted in the
marketplace. The reason for this lack of adoption is that the current generation of medication
dispensers and reminder systems are missing critical elements, especially verification that the
correct medications have been loaded at the appropriate dose. Automatic telephone calls following a missed dose do not distinguish between important and trivial errors and overwhelm families, MDs and other caregivers. Premature taking of abusable medicines is not detected by most designs. Many devices are costly, have multiple moving parts and are prone to malfunction. Implicit in failed systems are punitive “second checks” on the patient, counting openings of a pill bottle or requiring weight verification to “prove” that medicine has been taken. |

The Solution:
PillStation addresses each of these shortcomings, incorporating important behavioral science findings on personalized messaging and variable/ratio interval positive reinforcement. PillStation is based on the patent pending principle of direct visualization of tablets or capsules within day/time bins. A simple, low cost box with a design familiar to current caregivers is connected by telephone to a monitoring site. This allows flexible feedback to the patient, caregiver and family via computer or phone assisted operators. |
